How this tool works

Lauge-Hansen classified ankle injuries by the position of the foot at injury (supination or pronation) and the direction of the deforming force (adduction, abduction, or external rotation). Each pattern progresses through predictable stages of ligamentous and bony failure. Recognizing the pattern helps the radiologist search for occult injuries (e.g., medial clear-space widening, posterior malleolus, high fibula) and communicate instability risk to surgeons. Correlation with Weber level is useful but imperfect.
