How this tool works
The AAST heart (cardiac) injury scale (Organ Injury Scaling IV) integrates ECG abnormalities, blunt cardiac injury with failure or structural lesions, pericardial wounds, and penetrating myocardial injuries with or without tamponade. Grade VI injuries (cardiac avulsion or >50% chamber tissue loss) are generally lethal. Multiple penetrating wounds to one chamber or multi-chamber involvement advance the grade. Imaging (echo/CT) and operative findings should be reconciled; the highest applicable grade is assigned.
