How this tool works
The AAST chest wall injury scale (Moore et al., Organ Injury Scaling III) grades contusions, soft-tissue lacerations, and fractures of ribs, clavicle, sternum, and scapula. It is confined to the chest wall and does not encode associated intrathoracic visceral injury. Grade rises with number of ribs, displacement/open status, flail physiology, and soft-tissue avulsion. Higher-grade flail chest often needs ICU care, analgesia optimization, and consideration of surgical stabilization of rib fractures in selected patients.
