How this tool works

The Scheltens medial temporal atrophy scale (1992) rates each side on coronal T1-weighted MRI (or coronal CT) using the width of the choroid fissure, the width of the temporal horn and the height of the hippocampal formation: 0 no atrophy; 1 choroid fissure widening only; 2 added temporal horn widening with mild hippocampal height loss; 3 moderate hippocampal volume loss; 4 severe volume loss. Abnormality is age-dependent: MTA ≥ 2 is considered abnormal below 75 years and MTA ≥ 3 at 75 years or older. The scale is widely used in dementia imaging to support a diagnosis of Alzheimer disease, though medial temporal atrophy is not specific to it.
