Venous duplex ultrasound for deep vein thrombosis
Common femoral to popliteal veins; extended to calf veins per local protocol
Typical, not policy
Timings, volumes and delays here are representative values drawn from published guidance. Scanner generation, injector, cardiac output and local preference all move them. Confirm against your department's own protocol before you rely on a number.
When to use it
- Suspected lower or upper limb deep vein thrombosis.
Technique
- Compressibility is the primary criterion; augmentation and colour flow are adjuncts.
Where it goes wrong
- Isolated calf vein thrombus is variably sought between departments, so a negative proximal study does not have a uniform meaning — the report should state what was scanned.
