How this tool works
Two complementary radiographic severity systems are widely used in cystic fibrosis. The Bhalla CT score (1991) grades nine morphologic features on thin-section CT—bronchiectasis severity and extent, peribronchial thickening, mucus plugging, sacculations/abscesses, generations of bronchial involvement, bullae, emphysema, and collapse/consolidation. Component points are summed (maximum 25) and subtracted from 25 so that lower final scores indicate more severe disease. The Brasfield chest radiograph score (1980) rates air trapping, linear markings, nodular-cystic lesions, large lesions, and overall severity; points are subtracted from 25 (range approximately 3–25), again with lower scores reflecting worse disease. Both correlate with pulmonary function and are used for longitudinal monitoring and research endpoints.
