Diagnostic mammography (± tomosynthesis)

Bilateral CC and MLO, with supplementary views as indicated

Typical, not policy

Timings, volumes and delays here are representative values drawn from published guidance. Scanner generation, injector, cardiac output and local preference all move them. Confirm against your department's own protocol before you rely on a number.

When to use it

  • Symptomatic breast assessment in women typically over 40.
  • Screening recall assessment.

Technique

  • Combined with ultrasound and clinical examination in triple assessment.

Where it goes wrong

  • Sensitivity falls markedly in dense breast tissue, so a normal mammogram does not exclude malignancy in a woman with a palpable lump.

Contrast

None
